MONACO - The IAAF has provisionally suspended seven athletes* from Russia for doping offences, a decision which has been acknowledged by the All Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF).
The athletes have been charged under IAAF Rules 32.2 (b) and 32.2 (e) for a fraudulent substitution of urine which is both a prohibited method and also a form of tampering with the doping control process. These rule violations were established following the deliberate storage of samples by the IAAF and re-analysis using comparative DNA techniques, and were the result of a specific investigation which was instigated and carried out by the IAAF for more than a year.
The IAAF will make no further comment until a final decision has been taken by the ARAF, which now takes over the responsibility to adjudicate these cases.

Under IAAF Rules, athletes have up to 14 days to request a hearing with the National Member Federation. If a hearing is requested, it must be held within a period of two months.

Svetlana CHERKASOVA – 800m
Yulia FOMENKO – 1500m
Gulfiya KHANAFEYEVA – Hammer Throw
Darya PISHCHALNIKOVA - Discus Throw

Olga YEGOROVA - 1500m / 5000m

Le mezzofondiste romene Elena Antoci e Cristina Vasiloiu sono risultate positive all'EPO in un test antidoping effettuato lo scorso 16 luglio e, in attesa delle controanalisi, sono state sospese e potrebbero quindi essere escluse dalla nazionale di atletica leggera che prenderà parte alle Olimpiadi di Pechino. Le due atlete non si erano imbarcate domenica alla volta di Pechino con il resto della squadra romena. A Pechino avrebbero dovuto entrambe partecipare alla gara dei 1.500 metri. All'inizio del mese un altro test positivo aveva portato alla sospensione di Liliana Popescu, che avrebbe dovuto partecipare ad 800 e 1.500: Popescu, Antoci e Vasiloiu hanno tutte e tre lo stesso allenatore, Eleodor Rosca.

Le russe sono tutte atlete di altissimo livello.
La Soboleva ha la migliore prestazione stagionale mondiale negli 800 metri ed e' la primatista mondiale indoor dei 1500. In quest'ultima distanza la Tomashova e' stata campionessa mondiale nel 2003 e nel 2005.
La Khanafeyeva e' stata primatista mondiale del martello, la Pishcalnikova campionessa europea e seconda ai Mondiali dello scorso anno e cosi' via.
